Colwood:
Colwood is a part of the Western Communities of Greater Victoria, which stretch from Esquimalt Harbour to Rocky Point. Colwood was originally a farm established by the Hudson's Bay Company in the 1850's, but has now grown into a thriving community.
With a population of over 15,000 residents, Colwood is one of the most rapidly growing municipalities in the Greater Victoria area, with a variety of recreational opportunities and facilities.
Colwood is located 10 kilometers (6 miles) west of downtown Victoria. Surrounding Colwood are the town of View Royal (north), and the districts of Langford (west) and Metchosin (south).
Despite the fact that Colwood was only incorporated in 1985, the city has an engaging heritage that dates back to the 18th century.
Colwood has many important historical landmarks, including Hatley Castle and Fisgard Lighthouse. Hatley Park is Canada's largest and most diverse National Historic site. At the centre of this 565-acre Edwardian estate is the beautiful, historic Hatley Castle. Fisgard Lighthouse, built in 1860, was the first lighthouse on the west coast of Canada. Fisgard remains the oldest working lighthouse on the West Coast.
Royal Roads University is located in Hatley Park and has an undergraduate student population of over 400 students. It was formerly a Royal Canadian Naval college.
